A Possible, Necessary Hiatus

I hate doing this, but I may have to put BPD on a temporary hiatus, starting next week.

About a month ago, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She’s now the 3rd of the 4 female siblings in her family who has had it, one of whom died from it when I was in 6th grade, so my mother was understandably very upset and terrified at the diagnosis. At the beginning, what seemed to be a very small, barely detectable lump (she insisted on getting retested when the first one determined she was “abnormal, but fine”) has lead to, now, testing positive for cancer in both breasts. She’s having a double mastectomy on the 16th, which is the first day of the Furry Weekend Atlanta convention which I will be attending. I just got off the phone with her, and she was understandably upset that I wasn’t able to be there with her during her immediate recovery. Now I feel like the biggest asshole in the world, even though I made these plans long before I knew she even had cancer. I fly back on the 21st, and will be with her from there for as long as she needs me during her recovery, whether that’s a couple days or a few weeks.

Now you guys know why i’ve REALLY been stressed out for the last month or so. I was reluctant to even say anything, but I feel like I have to explain and be honest as to why I need to take time off from doing BPD for a while. It’s extremely hard to be funny and clever when your under this kind of emotional stress, and right now it’s more important to me to help my mom out as soon as I can, rather than jump immediately back into drawing comics. My mom needs me right now, and if it wasn’t for Atlanta, I’d be with her the day before till whenever she’s back to 100%.

I don’t know how long the hiatus will be. I’m hoping my mother will recover quickly, but I don’t want to rush back to Philly earlier than I should just to get back to work. But I will try to give you guys an update and let you know when normal updates will resume.

For those of you who are artistically inclined and want to contribute fan art or guest strips to fill the gap, feel free to e-mail them to LizardbethArt@gmail.com. The only limitations is that they be at most 800 pixels wide, and make sure any fonts are easily legible (I had a few complaints about past guest strips begin hard to read.) I won’t be more restrictive than that, as this is a favor I’m asking and don’t want to be too demanding. But if you’re feeling helpful, I would appreciate it.

Thank you for your understanding, guys. Again, I don’t come to this decision easily, but hope you can appreciate why I need to do this. I love my Mom, and right now making sure she recovers is more important than anything else.

There’s still 2 days left in the drive, so if you’ve been holding out to make sure shirts were happening before you pledged, it’s not too late to get in on the action! The Future of BPD: The Plan

by Liz on February 26, 2012 at 5:22 pm
Posted In: Blog

So I think I’ve figured out how I’m going to proceed with BPD.

First off, Book 4 I’ve decided will conclude at the end of April instead of the end of May.  It’s going to be thicker than the previous books anyway, being that I’ve been going 3-a-week since about two thirds the way into Book 3, so in the end length wise it will still be a bit longer but not freakishly thicker than the others.  This will also (hopefully) be the end of the current website layout design. I’ve been meaning to redo it for a long time, and switching up the format & schedule for the comic is a perfect time to do so.

Future updates to the BPD site will be as follows: Two days a week, there will be a comic as usual. Comic formats will vary; some days, they will be newspaper-stype strips. Some will be landscape pages as they are now.  Some will be tall comicbook-format pages. For the most part they will be short, one-comic gags.  Most will be back to black and white line-art, though grayscale and possibly even color will pop up from time to time.  A 3rd day each week will be dedicated to sketches.  They’ll range from silly doodles to sketch previews of up-and-coming purchase exclusive comics (more on those later). A 4th day will be dedicated to blog posts. Things like reviews, how-tos, recommendations, highlights of cool stuff i found, and other things I’ve been musing over doing but don’t want to give too much away in case they don’t happen.  And a 5th day will be sort of a wild-card day: it could be more sketches, a 2nd weekly blog post, or even a 3rd comic, sponsor willing (again, more on this later)

So 5 days a week, you guys will have stuff to check out and enjoy, 100% for free.

On top of the free comics posted on the site, I will also be doing full-color long form comics which will be available to purchase one-at-a-time in PDF form (readable on your computer, iPad, or other color e-Reader).  My goal is to have 1 a month, though longer stories may take longer to complete. Prices will range from $0.99 to $4.99, with most in the $1.99-$2.99 range.

I’ll also be experimenting with doing a “sponsor” program.  For $4 a month, you’ll get every bonus PDF comic that comes out, a discount code for any other product you may want to purchase in the future from the BPD store, first dibs on one-of-a-kind or limited run stuff, and a bunch of members-only previews and bonus content.  The main reason for this however is community driven; if enough people sponsor the comic, I’ll start doing extra free stuff for the site as a whole; an extra comic in the week, for example.  If you sponsor the comic for a year in advance, there will be an extra reward in it for you as well (it’s a surprise for now!)

In the realm of products, I’ll still be looking to do a book a year.  However, the book format will be changing up since I won’t be doing just landscape pages. The books will include all previous PDF comics as well as all the comics & sketches posted online.  I’ll be looking for a new book printer since Lulu sort of rapes you on color printing.  But all that means for you guys is Yay, color books!  I’m also looking to debut a new non-book piece of merch once a month.  It could be a t-shirt, stickers, buttons, keychains, posters, or whatever.  I’ll probably do a few smaller items at first and work my way up to bigger stuff (plushes anyone?).

So in summary: New website at the beginning of May with 5 days of free updates with a mixture of comics, sketches, and blog posts, purchasable long storys in PDF form, and a monthly sponsorship program with additional extras and rewards.

I understand there may be some resistance to this, since some people may feel slighted they aren’t able to see everything I produce for free anymore.  Any comic content I do “hide behind a paywall” will never be more expensive than your average Starbucks coffee.  If you still feel that’s too expensive, all I can say is I hope that the stuff I do post for free is fun and entertaining for you. I appreciate your interest in my work, and hope you can understand and appreciate why I’m making these changes.

For everyone else, I look forward to your feedback and support, and hope I can make the transition over to the new format as smooth as possible.  ^_^

T-Shirt Fundraiser : Progress!

by Liz on February 22, 2012 at 12:27 pm

1 week in, and we’re just under 50% of the way to funding our first run of T-shirts.  Hooray!!  For those of you who haven’t pledged towards the project yet, head over to our Kickstarter page for all of the details.  Even if you can’t pledge, spreading the word to your other BPD-reading friends, family members, co-workers, or anyone else you can think of would be greatly appreciated.  Remember, the shirts only get printed if we manage to make the $5,000 goal in the next 2 weeks, so get cracking and help make this happen!

On a related note, huge props to our Super Raptor Jesus-level pledger MagicNezumiKnight! You are a gentleman and a scolar and we (myself and all the fans) thank you from the bottoms of our hearts. ^_^

Cure your Nakedness: Get a BPD T-Shirt (or 4!)

by Liz on February 15, 2012 at 11:35 pm
Posted In: Blog

Hey guys!

I am SUPER EXCITED to tell you that I’ve decided to get some BPD t-shirts printed! And not just one design, mind you.  Nope. Indecisive work-a-holic little me went ahead and made 4 designs to choose from.  Click on the samples below to view a larger version.

In order to get them printed though, I’ll need your help. Like the books, printing a run of t-shirts is a huge investment, so I’m doing preorders to print all 4 designs.  However, rather than run the preorder for the shirts like I do with the books, I’ve decided to go through Kickstarter.  What this means is that you have lots of options as far as how much you want to contribute.  For the more generous among you, there’s some really sweet pledge rewards like deluxe merch packs and original art, and even a 3-comic cameo in BPD which includes the original art pages mailed to you.

Even if you don’t want a shirt, or just can’t afford to contribute that much, every pledge over $5 gets a set of 4 postcards with each of the designs on it.  So even if you can’t contribute much, you still get something.

If you want to join in and help us get our first shirts printed, head on over to Kickstarter and make a pledge!
