Studio Tour

Holy micron pens, Batman. I think you found me!

This is my studio workspace. I work out of my house; or, to be more specific, my living room. Here you’ll find all of the supplies and toys I use both to create Broken Plot Device, as well as provide inspiration and entertainment during my off hours. If I had to pick two words to describe it, it would be “Organized Chaos”.

Here’s a shot of the entire room. 15 foot ceilings & bright green walls came standard!

  1. Our massive bookshelf we inherited from Bob’s aunt. It’s got all of my art reference books, comics, old sketchbooks (some from late high school & early college) and print binders as well as Warhammer modeling supplies, board games, and a red Buddha statue.
  2. Our front door. Very exciting.
  3. Door to the kitchen, which is filled with food and coffee to fuel my efforts.
  4. Our breakfast nook, also inherited from Bob’s aunt. We currently have a bamboo pot on it, a good-luck move in gift from my mother. Bob takes care of it, because I have a tendency to kill plants.
  5. The most uncomfortable chair ever… which, unfortunately, is the only chair I have that’s the right size for my computer & art desks.
  6. My Commission & Mailing station with 3 slots; 1 for Commissions waiting for payment, 1 for Commissions that need approval from the buyer to continue, and one for commissions ready to mail out.
  7. Gift artwork from Jen Seng (Toonapalooza.net)
  8. Character reference sheet so I can keep the comic characters consistent.
  9. A Skroll mask I got at Wizard World Philadelphia 2008
  10. The back of my couch. This thing is the heaviest, most enormous thing ever due to the fact that it has 2 recliners in the sides. We had to take it apart into 3 separate pieces - rusted, stripped screws fighting us the whole way - just to get it into our old apartment. SO worth it though, it’s very comfy.

I got my desk from Ikea. Say what you will about Ikea, they make some snazzy furniture. I may be a little weird, but I really enjoy putting them together.

  1. Canon Pixma Pro9000 printer. 8 separate ink cartridges mean better color matching, AND it prints up to 13”x19”. On top of it is my tie-dyed giant beanie baby, Lizzie, and next to it is all my paper. Can never have too much paper.
  2. My meticulously painted Lizardmen warhammer band, accompanied by a 40K Carnifex (far right.)
  3. A collection of custom My Little Ponies (2 I made, 2 by other people) plus a Wizard World exclusive super hero pony bought for me by an extremely awesome fan.
  4. A PvP comic
  5. …and an Ugly Hill comic
  6. 3 Microbe Plushies (from left to right) : Beer Yeast, Mono (aka “the Kissing Disease”) and Flesh Eating Disease.
  7. My commission price chart so I can keep my prices straight.
  8. Flat screen Monitor that came with my first Mac (a G4) I got in college.
  9. A pair of suggestively-shaped speakers
  10. Cintiq 12WX, a birthday gift from my father and quite possibly the fanciest thing I own PERIOD. Mmmm, my precious!
  11. 3 year old 30gig iPod video, which has saved me on many a long convention car trip.
  12. G5 Mac tower. I’m kickin’ it with the Apple, yo.
  13. One of my many art inspiration books, this one being Art of Modern Rock: The Poster Explosion by Paul Grushkin & Dennis King. On top of it are some snazzy BRIGHT GREEN (I’m a nerd) SkullCandy headphones.
  14. HP ScanJet 6300C scanner, my trusty gray brick that turns my comics into digitized magic.

My drawing desk is also from Ikea. It was a mix-n-match deal where I could pair up any top with legs. The legs I wanted - sawhorse style with adjustable angle - weren’t in stock, so I had to just grab whatever. The top though was the awesome part, but I’ll go into that in a minute.

  1. The corner of my mailing station, peaking in to say hello.
  2. Wall mounted hooks for some french curves and a very neglected T-square.
  3. Paint brushes, 2-part apoxie clay, and a index card sketch I bought from Miss Monster.
  4. It’s summer, so I require a fan.
  5. A couple of in-progress customized My Little Ponies. (Yes, I know, incredibly dorky.)
  6. More wall mounted tools.
  7. A Faber-Castell colored brush ink pen set and 2 jars of pencils, gel pens, & various inking pens - Micron, Faber-Castell, and Pigma Sensei.
  8. A smaller badge-sized version of the gift picture from Jen Seng that’s in my window.
  9. A print by Meg Lyman of an octopus with sock puppets.
  10. Purple Cow Laminator.
  11. Prismacolor Pencils and my travel case of Tria Markers.
  12. One of 2 C-thru rulers, the single greatest ruler ever and the reason for my t-square’s neglecting.
  13. The reason my drawing desk is awesome: it has a glass panel in it that I can light from under it, creating a built-in light table. I use this when I letter my comics by putting a sheet of graph paper under my comic, so all my letters come out straight and correctly sized.
  14. Coffee = Art Fuel, in Bob’s pirate Mug (Jolly roger on one side, “ARRRRRRR!!!” on the other.)
  15. Pencils for a comic in progress. The comic is drawn on 11”x15” bristol paper.
  16. Script for “Phil Introduction” storyline (current as of this writing).
  17. Light-up electroSkull. I don’t have enough plugs under my desk at the moment to plug it in, so it just kind of sits there and looks transparent.
  18. Large folios & paper pads that won’t fit on my book shelf are stored here, as well as my very large canvas tote bag of extra markers.
  19. Green file box filled with boring paperwork.
